History

Since 1984

The Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies was founded in 1984, initially as the Center for Migration and Ethnic Studies, and has been called since 1987. It was created by merging the Center for Migration Research, the successor to the continuous research on external migration in Zagreb, which was joined in 1977 by the Center for the Study of Education of the Institute for Social Research of the University of Zagreb and the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (which has existed since 1965), with the aim of scientific research on external and internal migration, Croatian emigrants and minorities.

"A true homeland is actually a language. It determines the longing for the homeland and the distance from the homeland is always the fastest through language."

Wilhelm von Humboldt

Our Mission

The Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies is the only scientific research institution in Croatia, as well as in the wider environment, which systematically and continuously interdisciplinary monitors all forms of migration and population mobility, studies national / ethnic minorities and various aspects of ethnic issues, with special tasks scientific and public understanding of their complexity and reality.

All these topics have become extremely important for the Republic of Croatia in the last twenty years given the historical circumstances, and especially the problems caused by the collapse of the former state, border changes and the consequences of the Homeland War that resulted in various types of migration. Some of the topics became even more important with the accession of the Republic of Croatia to the European Union.

Namely, Croatia’s integration into the Union opens, in addition to previous migration trends, new research topics in the field of migration and ethnicity: a different position of Croatian citizens in Europe (new economic, educational, family and other migrations), the problem of old and new minorities, new forms of cross-border cooperation, the position of Croatia as an emigration and immigration country, the development of a new Croatian migration policy, the development of integration policy, transnational migration, the problem of Croatian emigration, increasingly important issues of asylum and illegal migration, and many others.

In addition, research on Croatian identity and the population of Croatian islands, coasts and continental regions, as well as comparative research on postmigrant phenomena such as the integration of migrants also occupy a significant place in the activities of the Institute. The Institute’s positioning on this issue positions it among similar European and world scientific research institutions and opens for cooperation with all partners whose primary activity is the research of the phenomena of migration, ethnicity, identity and mobility.

Goals
