Brief description of the project

The researchis based on the concept of globalization which is the dominant paradigm in contemporary social sciences. The goal is to study the impact of global migration processes, such as the EU enlargement and its possible growing into a federation of states, on the ethnic structure and the position of ethnic minorities in the Croatian social system. The project is based on the socio-political placement of national minorities in Croatia in the post-war, transition and Euro-integration period of its development. The problems of positioning national minorities in the Croatian society/state caused by war conflicts, ethno-nationalism and transition problems of the Croatian society/state raised new research issues.  In this process, owing to changes in the social structure and intense social dynamics, the integration of various social actors into the Croatian society on the foundations different from the pre-war ones was stressed as the major problem. The goal of the research is, in the first place, to find the answer to the question about the Croatian ethnic structure transformation in the process of building a modern nation-state in the context of EU integration. The very process of integration raises the question of attitudes of national and ethnic identities, understood in a traditional way, towards a new type of social system – the European Union. In new conditions, with a growing complexity of the European social system, "local terms" of sovereignty, nation, ethnicity, state and the individual are to be included in a different network of theoretical concepts. Unlike most previous research on national minorities (ethnic groups) focused on their legal and political position, this research is based on the questions that are theoretically important for sociology as a scientific discipline – the issues of (re)construction and (de)construction of primary social and communication relations networks in local communities, the issues of assimilation and identity of ethnic groups and individuals as well as the question of the construction of new identities in globalization processes.

Project implementation

A survey was designed and conducted in 2008. The aim of the research was to provide insight into socio-psychological and structural processes in the national-minority entity (assimilation, stigmatisation, integration, discrimination, and the like). 1080 respondents from national minorities: the Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians, Serbs in the former war areas and outside them, were surveyed in several Croatian regions (Western Slavonia, Eastern Slavonia, Dalmatia and the City of Zagreb). Papers based on the obtained results were published in journals and proceedings.
