Education

Passing on the knowledge acquired through the research activities is not only the Institute's obligation towards the community and society, it is also an important investment in the future of social research, especially in the field of migration, ethnicity and identity.

For several consecutive years now, the associates of The Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies have been lecturing the postgraduate courses at the Interuniversity Center in Dubrovnik , especially the course "Divided Societies" which covers ethnic disagreements and conflicts, the role of the state in the creation of social divisions and consequences of globalization related to ethnicity. The Institute's junior researchers are active participants of the course. They attend this course regularly and present their works in English. This year's course "Divide Societies VII: Nationalism in the 21 st Century" (20th -30th April 2004) will assemble lecturers and junior researchers of the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies.

Within the international project Migration and Intercultural Relations – Challenge for European Schools Today (program Socrates – Comenius 3), the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies and the Institute for the Advancement of Education agreed to cooperate. This cooperation includes organization of seminars as a part of the professional teachers training program according to the plan developed by the Institute for the Advancement of Education. On October 22, 2003, forty teachers from Croatia participated in a seminar and workshop held at the Secondary School for Catering Professions in Zagreb with the purpose of presenting the project tasks and goals and explaining the activities of the Croatian project team. The ultimate objective of this cooperation is to increase the number of schools participating in this project. The seminar was attended by guests from Norway , Professor Dan D. Daatland, the main project coordinator, and Nils Östrem, who gave a lecture on migrations in Norway . Our researchers, Jadranka Čačić-Kumpes, Jelena Zlatković Winter, Ivan Lajić and Dragutin Babić held lectures on interculturalism, multiethnicity and migration in Croatia and Europe . Teacher workshops were held by Ingrid Jurela-Jarak and Nevenka Lončarić of the Institute for the Advancement of Education as well as Rebeka Mesarić Žabčić, of the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies, and Nils Östrem.
